About Sugar Hills Kiln Works
Commercial kiln drying in the heart of Georgia's sawmill country
Our Operation
Sugar Hills Kiln Works was built to solve a simple problem: sawmills in the North Georgia mountains needed kiln drying capacity, but installing kilns at remote mill sites was expensive and impractical.
We set up shop in a central location — within 30 miles of 7-9 operating sawmills — and invested in the best equipment available: two 40-foot Nyle L200Pro dehumidification kilns with a combined capacity of roughly 80,000 board feet.
The model is straightforward: sawmills drop off lumber, we dry it to spec, they pick it up or ship direct to customers. Everyone wins — mills get kiln capacity without the capital investment, and our kilns stay busy year-round.
The Equipment
We run Nyle L200Pro dehumidification kilns — the workhorse of the commercial hardwood industry. These units deliver:
- Precise moisture control — Target any MC from 6-12%
- Energy efficiency — Dehumidification uses 50-70% less energy than conventional kilns
- Gentle drying — Lower temperatures mean less degrade
- Hybrid mode — Faster cycles when turnaround matters
- Eight-fan configuration — Even airflow across the entire load
Current Inventory on the Ground
We've got roughly two years of air-dried inventory ready to process — hardwood stock that's been properly stickered and dried down to 15-20% MC. This means faster turnaround on initial orders, since we're not starting with green lumber.
As we work through this inventory, we'll transition to drying green lumber from partner mills — longer cycles, but the same quality results.
Location
We're located in North Georgia, centrally positioned to serve the sawmill corridor in the mountains. Most partner mills are within a 30-mile radius, making drop-off and pickup practical.
Our location also makes shipping easier — we're closer to major freight routes than most mountain mill sites.
