Questions & Answers

The things sawmills and woodworkers ask us most. Don't see yours? Get in touch.

What moisture content will my lumber reach?
We dry to a stable 6–8% moisture content — the range woodworking, flooring, and cabinetry need so the wood stays put in a climate-controlled building. We meter every load before we call it done.
How long does drying take?
It depends on species and thickness. As a rough guide, softwood at 1–2" runs about 7–10 days in the kiln and hardwood about 14–21 days; thick slabs take longer. New kiln loads start roughly *every 3–4 weeks, so total turnaround includes the wait for the next load to begin.
Do you dry green, fresh-sawn lumber?
Yes. Bring it green off the mill. We sticker and load it, run a controlled schedule of heat, airflow, and humidity, and finish with a conditioning (stress-relief) step so the boards don't case-harden or warp.
Does kiln drying kill bugs and mold?
Yes — our schedule brings the core of the wood up past 130–160°F, which kills insects, larvae, eggs, and most mold and fungi. You get clean, stable lumber with no chemical treatment.
How much can the kiln hold?
About *4,000 board feet per charge. We handle boards up to 4" thick and *16 ft long, and slabs up to *60" wide. Larger or unusual loads — just ask.
Why not just air-dry?
Air-drying works but takes 8–16 months, stalls at whatever the local humidity allows, and never gets you down to the 6–8% a heated building needs. A kiln gets there in weeks, consistently, and relieves drying stress along the way.
What does it cost?
Pricing is by the board foot with a volume discount — see the Pricing & Policies page. We'll give you a firm quote when you reserve a load.
How do I get on the schedule?
Use the Reserve a Kiln Load form or call us. We'll confirm the next available load and your drop-off window.
